Millions of American’s are rallying in support of Israel. You rarely read or hear about this phenomenon in the mainstream media or at the synagogue, but it is real and it is profound. Christians are punctuating their support with celebrations in cities running the length and breathe of America. At this critical moment, while a latter-day Hitler pursues nuclear weapons in Iran, in part to wipe Israel off the map, millions are allying themselves with the Jewish state. Many are religious Christians organized under the banner of Christians United for Israel.

            On the night of January 16, 2007 at the San Diego Westin Hotel at Horton Plaza I got a first hand look at this movement. Two hundred and fifty Jews were the honored guests of the National Chairman of Christians United For Israel Pastor John Hagee and an overflow crowd of Christians who had gathered to declare their support for Israel. To say it was a moving night does not properly describe the emotional impact of this event on those in attendance. I saw many tears and felt a lump in my throat as Christians stood in ecstatic applause as five Holocaust survivors were acknowledged. Celebrations like this are filling convention sized halls in cities all over the country.

This is the time for all the Jewish skeptics to put aside their mistrust of conservative Christians. The moment has arrived to fully embrace those who love Israel and the Jewish people. After lamenting the sad history of anti-Semitism and the Churches failures of the past, Pastor Hagee vowed, in some of the most inspirational tones I have ever heard, “never again.” The Christian crowd exploded in affirmation of that sacred pledge. He reminded his Christian audience that without Judaism there could be no Christianity. As he put it, Judaism is at the “root.” Again the audience jumped to their feet in approbation. Only the most cynical of skeptics would detect anything but sincerity from those who came to honor Israel on that night. The myth of conservative Christian’s ulterior motives for supporting Israel was exposed.

To my knowledge, never before in history has any group so openly, in such numbers, and so defiantly proclaimed its support for the Jewish people and Israel. Let all the doubters go to www.cufi.org. Let them read Pastor Hagee’s speeches. Let them attend A Night to Honor Israel. Let them learn to embrace the millions who will support us as today’s Hitler rants, but before he has the power to act. We must remember that many of those who fought to defeat Hitler only came forward when they were threatened.  It is unprecedented in Jewish history for the Jewish people to have millions willing to stand with us against our enemies before they act. To do anything other than respond with gratitude, unity, and move forward in a unique holy alliance of Jews and Christians would be tragically ironic and self destructive.
