It is possible to find sanctuary, but there is work involved because it is not found in a building.

Sanctuary
Rev. Cheril Goodrich ©

In the days of old, sanctuary was a church. It was a building that provided a place of refuge where a person could go to get away from being persecuted by others that did not hold the same opinion as they did. The church’s sanctuary was such that even the political institutions or town government of the day did not violate the idea of sanctuary. This was the power of the church. To violate the sanctuary of the church was to invoke the wrath of God. Because of the superstitious beliefs regarding the idea of God, and not knowing for sure what they were dealing with, most people observed the sanctuary that was provided by the church. Depending on the kindness of the priest or priests were that occupying the church, the fate of the individual seeking sanctuary would either have a good experience or a terrible one.
Today we are much more educated and sophisticated to believe that a church can protect us from our crimes against the state and society. We also have a constitution that separates the church from the state, and we realize that to mix the two is a violation of not only the physical laws that we live under in time, but also a violation of Laws that God has created. The truth is, if we violate a physical law, we will pay the penalty by having a jury of our peers decide what we are guilty of. When we violate a Spiritual Law, there is another penalty that we will pay, but it does not seem to be as evident as the physical penalty that we pay when we break a physical law. This penalty is not because of our bad behavior, but instead because we are ignorant of these Laws by breaking them we are violating our own being.
Sanctuary is not a physical place; instead it is a spiritual place that is held within our mind. There is a misunderstanding concerning the brain and the mind. It is held within the science of man that the mind is held within the brain. The truth of the matter is that the brain is held within the mind, but because we cannot see the mind, credit is given to the brain for vast amounts of wisdom, which it does not hold. The brain is a tool for the mind. When we enter the physical realm, the mind does not understand how to be physical, so it uses the brain to store information in to interpret the physical experience it is having. This does not mean the brain is not important, but it does mean that as long as we give the brain credit for our being, we will not understand sanctuary. Sanctuary does not occur or exist anywhere in time, or within the physical realm. If it did then we would be able to extricate ourselves from the inner turmoil that we experience when problems arise in our lives and just go to that physical place and everything would be fine. We are our own worst enemy, and to find a place within ourselves where there is sanctuary is truly a blessing that cannot be put into words, but merely to experience it is indeed a desired result.
It is said that we use very little of our brain. The truth is that we use very little of our mind. The brain only explains our physical experience in this life. The brain contains memories of this life only, and so we can only access information from this life when we are tuning into the memories of this life. The mind, on the other hand, is unlimited. It is here that we can access the vast wisdom that abounds in the universe and beyond. When we do not understand the difference, we bind ourselves to physical law and do not avail ourselves of the spiritual wisdom that is outside of the brain. Remember, the brain is merely a tool of the mind that explains a physical existence to the mind and helps it to cope in the physical experience that it is having.
The mind is energy, and because energy is unlimited, it is not bound by the laws of time and space. Everyone has access to this energy, and when we do not use it, we are not living up to our potential. Just outside of the brain is everything. It is also where sanctuary lies. When we only look to the information that has been stored in the brain, we get trapped in the belief that we do not have an alternate solution to problems when they arise. Being trapped in the brain solution means we have to live by physical law, which means we must force or manipulate a circumstance in order to get what we want, because that’s what a physical solution does. When we move beyond the information that is in the brain, we tune into Spiritual Law, which removes us from the influence of time and the physical laws that we have grown accustomed to while living in a body. This Law does not abide by the laws of time, or any government that is in the world. When Jesus walked the earth, He proclaimed that His Kingdom was no part of this world. He knew it was not because He was able to live by Laws that did not conform to the laws of Rome, which was in power at the time of His life. He understood his physical body conformed to certain physical laws, but He also understood that if He wanted to, He could command a whole army of Angels that could and would protect and defend Him at His command. He fed the multitudes with the fish and loaves by using Laws that did not conform to a physical experience. Just before He fed the multitude, He looked up. He was not focusing on the information that was in His brain, He was instead focusing on a level of awareness that was just above His brain. This is where the Laws of God are, and we also have access to those Laws that He used. He proclaimed this when He told the apostles that they would do greater things than the things He had done.
Conflict and turmoil lives within the mind that has learned how to convert Spiritual Law into physical law. This is the mind/body experience. The truth is that the two were never supposed to mix but now that they have they must be separated so sanctuary can be understood. Sanctuary is not a physical experience and cannot be taught in school. That is physical law. Spiritual Law must be learned by allowing something new to enter the mind and show it where truth can be found. The learning of Spiritual Law is not taught in time. It is an internal learning process that happens when an individual begins to seek for truth. Each person in time has been assigned specific information and when the time is appropriate, they begin to access this information to begin to connect back with Spiritual Law. They also have been assigned a specific Spiritual Advisor that helps them learn what they have been assigned to learn and leave in time what they have learned to help heal it when their body experience is over. This is the sanctuary that we all crave and seek for, but are not sure how to access or use.
My sanctuary has been to find this information and use it by sharing it with others. There are other Laws that do not abide by what we have learned in time. The Laws of the Spirit are greater, when they are not contaminated by our physical experience. It is this contamination that we are here to undo. I am learning how to direct my mind away from the laws that bind my spirit and seem to prevent me from have a happy physical life. If I can do it, it is possible for anyone to. Physical law and Spiritual Law were never supposed to mix. Now that they have, they must be untangled from one another. When God asked Who would go and untangle the mess, we all raised our hand. It is time to live up to the agreement we made with God. When the call becomes overwhelming, it is the call to sanctuary, to go back Home where we are safe. It is just above the brain.
