The confession of sin is often misunderstood. It is not our behavior that is in question when we sin. It is our Spiritual Being that needs addressing.

Confession

Rev. Cheril Goodrich ©

Honesty

Confession is an act of honesty.  It is not honesty the way it is understood from a physical standpoint, but from a spiritual one.  Honesty is a result of, not necessarily being aware of immoral behavior, but instead looking within and finding why immoral behavior is occurring.  The greatest act of dishonesty that we commit is against ourselves.  We learn at a very young age to point our finger at others and blame someone else for our feelings and thus our behavior falls in line thereafter.  To be sure, a behavioral act does not occur because of someone else.  The only way we can resolve our own behavior, is to first of all stop blaming someone else.  This is the only way we can begin to be responsible for our own lives and stop being at the mercy of outside circumstances.  Otherwise we will continue to be a victim and it is no fun to be in this position.

Sin

Sin is one of the most misunderstood words in the human language.  Sin, from a spiritual point of view, is not in our behavior.  Behavior is an outcome of the sin.  We have all heard of sins against humanity, such as what the Nazi’s did to the Jews in WWll.  A sin, looked at spiritually does not address the behavior; instead it looks for the cause.

In the spiritual realm there is only cause and effect.  The sin is the cause and the behavior is the effect.  But in the physical realm, the effect of behavior goes on and on and this is what society punishes.  This is why forgiveness is needed, to stop the effects of the sin that continues to perpetuate itself until it is forgiven.

At our true Being level, we are loving, caring spiritual beings and behavior does not enter into determining Who We Are.  At the physical level, behavior is considered very much a part of who we are.  At the physical level, behavioral mistakes are made that make others suffer, and then the violator ends up paying a price for the so called “sin” against humanity.  Let’s just take a look at what begins a sinful nature.

Feelings

In the state of Being that is beyond our physical understanding, we are what we feel.  We wear our feelings of love, happiness, joy, goodness, etc on our sleeve for all to see.  Innocent Love is not protected because there is no need so these feelings are not hidden from view.  In fact they are expressed openly and shared without reservation.  Our feelings are our propeller.  This is true even in our physical state of being.  When we feel something, we act on the feeling, not the particular event that is occurring.  When our higher feelings get tied up in a physical experience, our being level makes a shift.  This shift causes us to become behavioral.  This occurs when we are Being loving, and our loving nature is violated in our own mind by another person’s seeming behavior.  The truth is that it is impossible to violate our Being, but when we are in the physical realm we begin to make allowances for another reality that allows for impossible mistakes and therefore behavior.  For instance, when we are children, we do not understand what is acceptable in the physical realm.  We continue to “Be” our spiritual self until someone perhaps tells us we are bad for Being the only thing we know how to Be.  Because our mind, or the part of us that is connected to the spiritual realm, understands “being” the option of being loving is exchanged for “being bad.”  Now the child has no other option than to “be” what he/she has been told that he/she is.  The mind will work at “being level” of what it has been told it is, and the outcome is behavior.  This is sin.

This happens on many levels.  When behavior is out of line with our true Being, then there has been an exchange that has shifted our loving nature to a doing or behavioral nature.

Mind/Body Connection

Because the mind does not know what to do with the new being that has been made out of sin, it has to find another place to store and access this information that has been incorrectly assessed.  The new picture of the altered being is stored in the body as an intense emotional charge that brings a tremendous amount of fear when a situation occurs that appears to be like the first “sin”.  We all have experienced this, and no matter how much we tell ourselves that the fear is unreasonable, it still remains.  This is why “sin” is so hard to deal with.  As we mature, this uncomfortable feeling makes no sense as we try to maneuver around it.  The sin must be forgiven otherwise unacceptable behavior will be the result.

The Restoration

When our Being level has been violated, it must be restored to the correct connection, which is spiritual, otherwise the internal problem will remain and we will continue to experience externally what we feel internally.  This is the profound effect that shows up in behavior.  Because we do not know how to “do” this, we have to learn how to work within a part of our mind that we are unaccustomed to working with.  Problems cannot be solved at the same level at which they are occurring.  This means that we cannot reconnect to our “Being” because we do not know how.  Special provisions have been made for mankind at this particular time to help us correct the error or the sin.  One of the provisions is the miracle.  The miracle is where the inner shift takes place and puts us back in connection with our true “Being”.

The Confession

The first thing that has to happen is to recognize that there is a problem.  Instead of blaming, we take responsibility by admitting that the problem is our own.  This opens up the communication process between our mind and the Holy Spirit Who can help us make the correction.  The emotion around the incorrectly learned incident must be expelled from the body entirely so Love can once again express itself the way it is supposed to, from our Being.  Love is once again being moved through us and expressed instead of being imprisoned in fear.

As we learn to confess, or be honest until the “sin” is expelled we learn to use this process in all situations. Because the Holy Spirit is involved, He is the solution that God gave to us for the problem of sin, and the means to heal will be given, but it is up to us to work with Him.

All Have Sinned

“All have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God,” means that we have fallen short of our own Glory and that it can be restored.  Special provisions have been made for mankind to help us rid the world of “sin”.  It is up to us to take the initiative and learn what these provisions are.  It takes work, but God would not give us a Plan that is impossible for us to accomplish.

I've always believed... and this belief has only been strengthened as my life experiences accrue... that honesty (with self, with others, with God) is the basis for everything... for growth, for understanding, for joy, for intimacy, for creativity, for forgiveness, for healing. I've enjoyed your article.
