From the earliest ages people have been exchanging something of value for something else of value. For example, when we buy a product we provide some monetary value to receive a product which has a certain value to us. When we are the producer of a product we provide our product to receive some monetary value. We also provide some monetary value to receive a service which has a certain value for us. When we are the provider of the service we provide our service to receive some monetary value.
These exchanges of value are commonly known as transactions. The word ‘transaction’ has two components, namely ‘trans’ and ‘action’. They literally mean ‘across action’. There are therefore actions taking place from both sides across the exchange of something of value. In every transaction, however, there must be an assurance on both sides that the value of that which is received is what the provider promises it to be. There is a need for trust between the provider and the receiver. This trust is confirmed by a promise or guarantee by the provider that the product or the service will comply with requirements for quality, performance, durability, etc.
Through the ages various ways have been devised to confirm the trust about the quality of the product or service. Originally the agreement between provider and receiver was based entirely on word of honour. It was accepted that you say what you mean and that you mean what you say. It was expected that you mean what you promise. Later on the agreement was spelled out in legal contracts and the signature of a person became the legal confirmation that what is guaranteed will be fulfilled.
Guarantees on a personal level are also important. There is a need for trust between people without the need for formal written guarantees and contracts. There is a need for dependability in relationships. There is a need to abide by the values of honour, decency and trust. There is a need to be aboveboard, open and honest in all respects. There is a need for integrity. It is important to honour your promises. It is important to build and protect your reputation as a person of honour. It is important for individuals to guarantee quality in their actions.
The sure way to create trust and to guarantee personal qualities is to have a positive approach to life. A positive approach to life guarantees positive behaviour.
When we have a positive attitude in the work situation we guarantee that we are dependable, that our employer can trust us, that our work will be of the best possible quality and that we will meet our deadlines. We guarantee that we are helping to achieve the goals of the organization, that we work well in teams and that we provide leadership and support.
When we have a positive attitude in life in general we guarantee that we have good values, that we care for our loved ones, that we value our friendships and that we are compassionate. We guarantee that we are law-abiding citizens and that we provide community service to those in need.
A positive attitude is indeed a guarantee of quality.
