In this article Dr Phil Minnaar looks at the limiting boundaries that we set ourselves in our minds of what can and what we can not do. He lists examples of the fears that keep us from using our talents and identifies the root cause of fears.
Phil shows how we can use the positive word 'bold' as a means to face our fears in a rational way and expand our limiting boundaries.

 The word ‘Bold’ is explained as follows in The Positive Dictionary: We determine our own boundaries of what we think we can do. We set the limits of our capabilities by fixing boundaries which we believe we can not cross.  We limit our potential. We create the boundaries within which we feel comfortable. This is commonly known as staying in our comfort zones.

 Bold: Be bold, and fear will disappear.

*  Boldness ensures courage and daring.

Some people are quite content to stay in their comfort zones. Most people, however, wish they could achieve more in life. The reality is that we can do much more than what we think we can do. We have talents that have been suppressed by negative thinking. We can develop the capabilities to do things we thought impossible.

The reason why we limit our capabilities is fear. Fear can be any one or a combination of:

*  fear of the unknown;

*  fear of failure;

*  fear of shame;

*  fear of responsibility;

*  fear of standing out;

*  fear of risk;

*  fear of conflict;

*  fear of too much effort.

*  fear of what other people may think

     and other fears.

The root cause of fear is uncertainty. We fear the unknown about what may happen when we cross our borders of comfort. Then there is also the uncertainty about the future in general. We tend to hesitate to act because of fear, which is mostly subconsciously, although we would seldom admit it.

Fear caused by uncertainty can be reduced in a rational way by:

*  collecting relevant data;

*  converting the data into useful information;

*  accumulating relevant knowledge;

*  doing projections;

*  creating scenarios;

*  doing risk analyses;

*  making calculated decisions;

*  taking bold action based on confidence.

The solution is to be bold, to face the fear, to cross those limiting boundaries and to tackle the uncertainty and fear in a rational and confident way. By boldly crossing our boundaries we expand our abilities and increase our confidence. With ever expanding boundaries the impossible becomes possible.

Boldness, based on rational thinking with firm decisions, replaces fear with courage and daring to cross our limiting boundaries and achieve success.

We admire people who are very successful, who have achieved great things, who have become famous. We may see them as role models and as examples to follow. We may even have specific goals to do what they do. In reality, however, few of us reach those pinnacles because of the fixed boundaries in our minds.
