If you were an aspiring writer, say, five or ten years ago, the deck might have been stacked against you. Sure, maybe if you were a politician, or a widely respected professor, you might have been able to jump to the front of the line. But for the rest of us mortals, writing that novel or non fiction book was next to impossible.
Sure, taking the time to write for a couple of hours a day is one thing. But taking your finished manuscript and shopping it around was something else. Just finding an agent to represent you was a task in and of itself. Once you found an agent, it might be a year or two before you'd get a publishing deal, if ever.
From a business standpoint, this makes sense. Consider what buying process you go through when purchasing a book, either online or in a bookstore. Most people don't want to take a risk on an author they haven't heard of. Not only because books are expensive, but also because you're going to be spending a couple weeks reading it. You want to make sure you don't waste any money, or any time. That's why we usually go with a known name, or somebody that's gotten a lot of publicity. An unknown author is a big risk.
So when unknown authors are shopping their books around, both agents and publishers know they are going to be a hard sell. Before, the only alternative was to go through a self publisher. This usually cost a couple grand, and didn't usually guarantee any success. For the vast majority of self published authors, this was a money losing proposition.
But that's all changing now. If you've got any kind of book, publishing it yourself via Kindle is quick, easy and free. Because there's no up front costs, you aren't really worried about making any money back.
So plenty of first time authors are publishing on Kindle and selling their books for 99 cents. And many are having remarkable results. Now consider the buyer's experience. You check out this book on Kindle. It looks pretty good, sounds interesting. But you've never heard of the author. But what the heck, it's only 99 cents! What have you got to lose? Just buy it, download it, read the first few pages, and if it's good, you've got a bargain, if it's not, you've only spent 99 cents and at most, an hour.
Now we're talking. That barrier to entry is gone. Many first time authors are finding Kindle an amazing way to break into the writing business. It's not uncommon to hear of first time, self published authors on Kindle making a tidy sum of money.
