There's a very common myth that says all you need to do is build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door. This says that all you need is some kind of idea, that's new enough and beneficial enough and people will somehow find it.
Let's look at two reasons why this is a false. The first reason is that it depends largely on other people's behavior. This means you've got some great product, book, or idea, and you expect people to not only find you, but then tell all their friends about it.
Sure, this can happen. Imagine if you found some kind of machine that you could build with parts from your local hardware store for less than ten bucks. And this machine turned water into wine, and dirt into cheeseburgers. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't need to do a lot of marketing.
But let's be honest, most of us won't ever come up with groundbreaking ideas on that order. No inventor ever has. If you do come up with something that's way better than everything that exists on the market, it will still take a long time for enough people to know about it. Depending on people talking up your idea is simply not a good business strategy.
Let's look at the other side of the coin. Why do we wish that it would happen that way? Why are we willing to wait years for our products to fly off the shelves without needing our interaction?
Because most of us are terrified to talk to other people. Not only do we lack the
communication skills, but we lack the confidence and belief in ourselves and our products to get out there, day in and day out, and tell everybody we see about ourselves, and our work.
We all know famous stories. How Grisham lugged his books around in his trunk to every bookstore he could find.
Would you be willing to do that? If you knew you were guaranteed of massive success if only you to talk to a ten strangers very single day for the next year, would you do it? What about if you knew that you had a fifty percent chance of success? Would you take the risk?
Because you are reading this now, you've got great ideas. Wonderful thoughts. A fantastic story to tell. Are you willing to put in the work to get the word out? Or are you going to wait and hope that people come knocking on your door hoping to hear it?
Are you willing to take responsibility for your success, or are you hoping for something easier.
