It's no secret that the economy is in bad shape these days. No matter how much the politicians try to spin it, we're in pretty bad shape, and there doesn't to seem to be much that those goofs in charge can do that will help.
Long gone are the days where you could get a job, show up on time, do your best, and you'd earn enough to make a decent living. More and more people need to take things into their own hands, and release any expectations that the government is going to take care of them.
To that end, learning some powerfully effective communication and
interpersonal skills can be your best weapon, as you need to be very nimble in times like these.
But back to the original question. Why do societies always seem to collapse? It might have to do with the difference in the structure of our instincts vs the structure of our modern society.
Humans lived in small bands of hunter gatherers for a long, long time before we invented agriculture, and grew much bigger. In a sense, we are still cavemen trying to get by in large societies.
Why does that not work? Consider the basic instincts that served a typical cave person. They always organized themselves into hierarchies. Since those at the top of the ladder got more good stuff than those on the lower ladder, we developed a huge desire to increase our social status at all costs.
Simply because those that were really good at increasing their social status and power had more kids than those who didn't, this has been a huge driving force of evolution.
But a large society is organized by trade. A huge amount of people, all with massively diverse skills and talents, all creating things and selling them to each other.
But since we all feel a deep, psychological need for a "leader" we get these politicians who imagine it's their jobs to tell us what to do.
And since they are driven, on a deep level, to increase their power, that's what they do. Consequently, governments tend to get bigger and bigger. Pretty soon they are so big, and complicated, and expensive, that they're choking off all other productivity.
And BOOM. One day, it's all over.
Of course, it takes a long time for a society to collapse. But I think that it's not an out of the world statement to stay our society has reached a tipping point.
Now more than ever, developing the skills that you can carry with you, wherever you go, inside your brain, is crucial. To learn them, check this out:
