Most people are afraid to act on hunches. This keeps them from getting some pretty amazing things.

Ever since I was a kid, I've been interested in the stock market.

One because you can make a ton of money (and lose a ton just as easily).

But two because it's an incredibly dense psychological study of human behavior.

When you're looking at all kinds of charts and graphs and indicators and oscillators, it can appear to be something out of science fiction, or some kind of advanced calculus.

But every single point represents the subjective, in the moment decision of thousands of people.

Sure, a lot of these guys have all kinds of financial training, and they've spent their entire lives learning how to read balance sheets, predicting the future of the economy, etc.

But if you've ever seen a trading floor, with all the guys screaming and yelling and throwing all kinds of hand signals all over the place, calm, collected and rational is NOT the way most people would describe it.

One famous stock trader from the old days is a guy by the name of Jesse Livermore. He traded in the 20's and 30's. He wrote a couple of books about his experiences.

The thing that struck me the most was his method of taking action. He wasn't the type that would sit and measure things a thousand different ways. He also wouldn't go in full steam ahead, with only hope and crossed fingers.

He would see the markets, and as he described it, "throw out a line," to see which way it would move.

Meaning he would have to feel at least a little bit committed to understand what was happening. Not too much.

He understood the difference between simply looking at things, measuring things, and trying to make "safe" predictions, and actually getting involved, and getting feedback.

He knew that real world feedback was a thousand times better than any kind of theoretical calculation.

Sure, he'd have hunches. So he'd "throw out a line," and see if his hunch was right. If it was,  he'd go all in, and make a killing. If his hunch wasn't right, well then, he only lost a little bit (his "line").

This is a FANTASTIC strategy for going after anything. Money, fame, relationships, jobs, whatever.

Check it out, listen to your gut, see what your "hunch" is, and then throw out a line, and see what happens.

The feedback you get will tell you more than any kind of theoretical calculation.

Now, this can be difficult to do. Taking action, even small action, can be hard. It can be scary, and it will NEVER be fool proof guaranteed to work.

But that's the ONLY WAY to get mad success.

Hunches are great, because that's what drives innovation. However, when taking a company to back by buying their stock, it helps to understand the company and where it's going in the long run, rather than try to make short gains on unreliable tips.

For example, I've been a long time Apple fan because of the power of the operating system and the reliability of the products. From the beginning, most geeks were skeptical, and when Apple did not cater to the "enterprise" models, the company was virtually written off. I didn't have the money to buy stock in those days, but wish I had, because when Steve Jobs came back at the helm, in the late 90s, innovation and creating markets started to happen, taking Apple to a level unheard of in their early days. I have plenty of their stock today, and the innovations they're making and the dividends they're giving, make Apple more than just a hunch.

But, all companies have their time in the sun, and eventually, like General Motors and many others, Apple will eventually fail.
