Let's Cut the Two Gini Ladies in Half!
What could be more gracious, uplifting, and beneficial to everyone than requiring the Federal Reserve Board to cut two ladies in half? Nothing that I can think of. Indeed, since 98 percent of the country has likely never heard of them, how bad could it be? Actually, it would be an act of such stupendous importance, the Fed would be forever regarded as the savior of our country by all those of good will, and the most condemned body of tyrants ever by the rest. Have I got your attention yet?
To begin we must define our terms. The Gini's in question are coefficients. One is the wealth coefficient, and the other is the income coefficient. And to be more precise, they each represent the degree of inequality that exists among us in those areas if economic concern. But don't you dare let your eyes glaze over. These are the two most important ladies of our time. Sawing them in half will cut them down to size while it stops the bloodiest revolution in world history that is advancing on us right now even as you read these words. Now have I got your attention?
If you are beginning to think this is just one more of those “share the wealth” essays, you are wrong. If the Fed or any other body were to cut the wealth and income inequality coefficients by one-half, we would still have a lot of inequality. The rich would still be rich, the middle class would expand and improve their net worth balance sheets by a substantial sum, but the poor would be raised up from the grave much like Lazarus of biblical fame. We would not have found Utopia or the Promised Land, but the angels and the saints in heaven would all be singing Gloria in Excelsis Deo. I cannot even imagine how to speak for those who would hate this outcome. But I can think of several unprintable names that describe their state of darkness.
Before I reveal the numbers behind this magical phenom, let's talk about perceptions. The new state of being that I am referring to would still represent a lot of inequality. That new state would be approximately what the majority of Americans believes exists today. Think about that. I am writing in favor of something that most of us believes already exists. How radical is that? Moreover, neither you nor I would be required to do any thing overtly in order to bring about the transformation. That task would fall onto the Fed.
Wealth and income inequality are approximately one thousand times worse than the typical person believes they are. And that is because we are not conditioned to think in very large or very small numbers. I'm here to help. We currently have $77 trillion of wealth (net worth). Here is a visualization of that wealth:
A stack of $10,000 in 100 dollar bills is 0.75 inches tall. That means that $10 trillion would be 750 million inches tall. And $77 trillion would make a stack of $100 dollar bills 57.750 million inches tall. That reduces to 4.75 million feet, and that reduces to 8.996 million miles. And that can be visualized by 20 round trip circles to the moon and back. And that is a lot of dough.
The rich have got $65 trillion of those looping stacks of circles, or 17 round trips to the moon. Got it?
In contrast, the poor (all 69 million of them) have got zero. Zilch. Nada. And that is because their debts are equal to or greater than their assets. The middle class is sandwiched in between with about $9 trillion of wealth. Churches, schools, and charities have the rest. That is our starting point. Anyone who believes that status quo is fair, please leave the room. This conversation is over your head in more ways than one. Anyone who believes it came about by hard work on the part of the wealthy, and/or laziness on the part of the poor, please leave the room. You have been brain washed.
How could the Fed produce what 238 years of “free markets” have failed to produce?
The Fed is now empowered to help grow the economy, to help bring about full employment, and stable prices. Let's give them one more mandate: Cut the wealth and income Gini coefficients in half in the next 20 years. With the power to print money and to see who gets it, they would have all the tools they need.
What about Congress? Wouldn't the right wingers kill any such legislation? Not if it were added on as a rider to one of their favorite issues such as reducing the debt. Just make certain the language was beyond their comprehension such as “The Federal Reserve is mandated to reduce the two national Lorenz curves and their corresponding coefficients by one-half over the next 20 years by any monetary means at their disposal.”
Can you name one Tea Party legislator who would even have a clue?
