Return to Sender

The debate surrounding the origins of the Electoral College apparently centered on this concern among the brethren, c. 1787:  “Dare we entrust those too easily influenced voters that we know as common citizens to elect someone—anyone—to act prudently and wisely in their behalves?”  After debating this issue among themselves (wealthy land and slave owners) for perhaps three minutes, they arrived at the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.  “Hell no,” they shouted unanimously. They were concerned that the commoners would indeed vote for a charismatic snake charmer who would come along and fill their empty heads with bull crap straight from the depths of hell.

And so, here we are a mere 230 years later, still shoveling the smelly stuff with hot pitch forks.  Well, at least they got it half right.  We have met the enema, and we is it.  Now we must begin the task of turning on the fans while the BS is flying our way in buckets.

Unfortunately, we do not have the wisdom of 10 year olds to guide us. All the arguments that have been aired thus far in defense of the snake charmer would have been marked “return to sender” if anyone had had the foresight to seek their counsel.  But no.  Those pesky little rascals are never on the side of greed, or “me first.”  They rely on honesty and fair play; and who needs that in their lives?

And with just 13 days until the bells toll, too many still do not know for whom they will toll.  Instead, we all hear the whining of that second place winner.  “Vladimir who?  It cudda been a 400 pound guy sitting in his basement.”  While keener minds reply:  “But what about the conclusions of 17 intelligence agencies?  They have spies on the ground in and around the Kremlin, and computers, and lip reading skills, and …”

“Who and what the hell are they compared to my superior instincts?  We’ll get rid of them along with the Environmental Protection Agency, and Education, and Labor, and…I forget the names of the others. But trust me, I know more than my generals.  That’s why I am making them my closest advisors.”

Fast forward to January 20, 2017:  “Do you solemnly swear to faithfully execute the laws, so help you…”  Yeah, yeah, yeah.  Now gimme the codes and the remote control.  Let’s see what a big crater along our southern border looks like. And we can lob a big one onto Cuba. I just spoke with Vlad, and …”

“Who’s ringin’ them bells?”

I wish more people would listen to the same wisdom you espouse. Unfortunately, as you have noted in the past, we are but political lemmings headed for the proverbial cliff.

Your satire is saccharine. We certainly will see… Won't we… Who will get hired and who will get fired. There are certainly going to be a lot of jobs available thanks to all that firing.

Irony at its best. We live, as your piece portrays, in a society of elitist "thinking" even by the lowest on fame, fortune and contentment scales. "Who's ringin'them bells?" indeed. We can count on the Putineeze, the Jong-uneese, the Assadeneeze to rock the bells to eardrum shattering pitch.
