We are a nation of worshipers, a culture of idolaters. We bend and kiss body parts with reckless abandon. We create champions from mediocrity, heroes from those who do what they are required to do, and legends out of ordinary mortals who merely find themselves in the right place at the right time. We even assemble search committees on the pretense of scouring the entire land to find that one person believed to be best qualified to put up on a pedestal (with a concomitant overblown salary, outrageous bonuses, and lavish perquisites) knowing full well that there are 50,000 others who could fill that same position with the aid of a dart, a dart thrower, and assorted lists attached to a wall. And every now and then, we implode within our delusional pursuits and elect someone to high office who will rape, pillage, and plunderl—taking our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor down in the carnage—while we set on our collective hands and do nothing to stop him.

Occasionally a bit of light filters through our blinders, and we start to acknowledge that we are living in a fool’s paradise. And so we resort to little phrases that help us maintain the status quo in our world of make believe. For example, when a golfer who is paid $100 million a year “lays up” with a safe shot (a sissy’s option), some say he shows “courage.” Or when a politician sets immobilized in a state of fear or confusion, we say he is making a “steely-eyed” decision. Clearer heads conclude that this dufus is completely out of his depth and he is frozen in fear while drowning in the sweat from his own shallow ignorance.

If I need to use more examples, your “vision thing” is probably too cloudy, or your horizon is too dim, or, perhaps, your head is screwed on backwards.

No my fellow readers and thinkers, we live in a world of the inverted pyramid where bad results are the logical outcome of bad choices; where those who can are prevented from doing so, and those who cannot are put in charge. We delude ourselves with catchy phrases wrapped up in false patriotism such as these old standbys: “land of the free,” or “equal opportunity,” or “my country, right or wrong.”

If it doesn’t make sense to third graders, it ain’t working. So let’s stop the BS.

We don’t need fake news, or false notions of fake news, or lies masquerading as alternate facts, or assertions masquerading as anything. And we do not need a megalomaniac with the nuclear codes who, in a moment of clogged cranial synapses, orders up the nuclear force that would end humanity as we know it. Nor do we need this same fool to dismantle 230 years of wobbly but honest nation building in which we all have a huge stake. That is known as our heritage.

Every day in every way, we all need to speak up—loud and clear. We do not have to take any more of this lunacy under the guise of “wait and see.” We need to contain, control, and corral; and then remove this imminent threat to all that we hold dear.
