The Paris Accords

For most of us life is a struggle, a fight for survival, a fight for what is right. We fight to end wars; we fight to win the peace; we fight to save lives; we fight to educate our children; we fight for equality; we fight for freedom, and we fight to save our planet. Donald Trump is not a fighter—not in war, not in peace, and not in the cause of justice. Donald Trump is a taker and a faker. Like the little boy who hasn’t the skills, or the smarts to participate in the game, or the balls to get in the game and fight for what is right, he just takes his ball and runs home to mommy. Poor little baby. Poor little spoiled brat. Poor little liar. Poor little coward. But this time there is no mommy to run home to. And that is because Mother Nature is always on the right side of history, and always on the side of those who are fighters for justice.

And so it is with the Paris Accords. 197 countries decided to stand together to fight to save the planet—not for its place in the cosmos—but from our past, and our present, and from ourselves. The world in its collective wisdom acknowledges that we must work together to reverse the actions that have put us on a collision course with Nature. But not Donald. He prefers to run away with Syria and Nicaragua—two countries whose leaders have yet to show signs of understanding history, and which side of history honors truth and justice. To Donald there is no right or wrong in this world. There are only deals to be made. He avoids doing what is right under the guise of looking for a better deal. But in reality he wants only a deal that puts more money in his pockets; more glitz and glamour in his Towers; another trophy that proclaims “look at me—aren’t I great?”

Make America Great Again: What an embarrassing slogan. What an empty slogan. Rich and poor alike are now mocking it. Where is the greatness in always being against those causes and outcomes that support humanity? Where is the dignity in wanting to take from those who have little left to take, and giving to those who have more than they can ever use? Where is the honor in always looking to enrich yourself at the expense of all others?

A better slogan that fits Donald Trump and his administration is this: Wake Up America! How much more of this phony are we willing to take? He is hell bent on plundering our economy; stripping health care from the impoverished; destroying our public education system; letting his cronies sack Wall Street; selling our infrastructure to foreign interests; opening our doors to despots; removing honorable people from positions of trust; pumping oil and burning coal to the last chunk and drop; destroying our alliances built up from decades of good will; while surrounding himself with loyalists who seek only to make a mockery of our heritage.

Donald Trump doesn’t care about climate change or about Paris. But neither Paris nor Nature likes tyrants and destroyers. Both have survived hundreds of them. Paris has outlasted them for 2,000 years from the Romans, to Attila the Hun, to the Bubonic Plague to the invading Nazi armies. It will be standing and shining long after Donald Trump is gone. Nature has withstood the worst that humanity could throw at her. She has her own way of fighting back. And all the deniers and their riches cannot stop her.

Outstanding! You always tell it best. I'm reminded of Copernicus and Galileo. Two men of science who knew the truth, but were faced with insurmountable opposition from the Church of Rome. Today, that church is waking up from a long slumber and trying to tell Trump that he's on the wrong side of history.

But flat earth people still exist. They inhabit our heartland with their myths and prejudices that Trump caters to nicely with his lies. And they inhabit the Congress supported by money from the unknown but quite sinister moneyed powers that be.
