Near-Death Experiences and the Scientific Method

Note: Essential data fact-checked via Microsoft Edge and/or
Bing, the AI collectors of facts

According to science, something is said to exist in our universe if it has length, mass, time, temperature, luminescence, or amounts of substance—and if it is verifiably a person, place, or thing. It could still exist with none of those characteristics, but it would be pointless to study it with our limited tools and techniques, because such study would take up a lot of our valuable time in endless investigations and discussions. Afterward, we would still have nothing to hang our hats on. We are immediately left to exclude the existence of life after the death of our bodies, the existence of God, of heaven, and perhaps other persons, places, or things that seem to be very important to more than 80 percent of this world’s population. 42 percent of scientists are among the nonbelievers. About 33 percent of scientists are believers in God, and another 18 percent believe in some form of a spiritual place where our spirits go for additional revelations. 7 percent refused to answer the Pew Research questions.

On the other hand (figuratively speaking), there is a growing body of persons who have told us of their near-death experiences (NDEs). Their tales are very similar regardless of time, place, gender, age, and their prior beliefs. In the US, that number is about 13.2 million. Extrapolated to the world, and this pool of NDE persons expands to 328 million.

Stated very briefly, the NDErs tell us about traveling through a tunnel, then arriving in a glorious new place where virtually all things take on a heightened sense of beauty and peacefulness, where there are a huge number of souls; communication takes place telepathically, and an overwhelming sense of love and tranquility is the norm. There are no judgments, and no punishments as we know them. Moreover, there are no religions, although many religious persons are present. After just a very short time, the great majority of NDErs want to stay, even when given the option to stay or to return to their Earthly bodies. Virtually all have reported that their “heavenly” sense of being was far stronger than their Earthly sense of being, and that their Earthly senses leaned more toward a dream or a psychological phenomenon by comparison.

All are welcomed in heaven including former rich and poor, doctors, lawyers, scientists, philosophers, farmers and atheists. Most also return to Earth or to another planet in the universe for another incarnation. The purpose of these re-incarnations is to acquire more and more worldly experiences, to live in new environments, to suffer pain, hunger, and disease, and to grow into higher and higher versions of our spiritual selves. Ultimately, all are assumed into and become part of the Creator. Atonements take place in the next and future existences where a former rich person, for example, must live a life of poverty, or a healthy person must suffer from deformities and disease.

Much of these existences are also confirmed via dreams and with the aid of counselors who intercede between those who are here and those who are there.

I am in the camp of the NDErs. Heretofore, scientists have taken the position that all things measurable in the universe occur from a long series of random events. In theory, everything can be explained without the need for an unexamined life in another dimension that we cannot verify. To acknowledge an after-life is to eventually stop all scientific investigations of the here and now. I say that we need to put the preceding statement to the test of science. The first rule to any scientific study is this: Science never proves any hypothesis; it merely fails to reject it.

Thanks, Ron, for a very shallow response to a serious subject. There is no requirement for you or anyone to respond to virtually every composition posted on the Den by me or by others. A proper review of my postings should be limited to their interest, plausibility, or compellingness. Telling readers about yourself, your limited experiences or your beliefs on my pages rather than on yours also lessens your credibility. There are literally thousands of videos posted on the Internet that are far more interesting and plausible than are your comments on the subject of NDE's. You might try reading and/or listening to a few before showing your uninformed disdain for a subject that literally millions of others (including many scientists) find very compelling.

You have presented some interesting facts about, particularly the Pew research survey of scientists on the prevalence of NDEs among them. It is interesting to note that here in United States the percentage of the population that seems to have experienced NDEs is much higher than in the rest of the world. However with data like this, I believe that much of the populated world is not queried for various reasons.

I have experienced near death, more than once. But I never experienced any vision like described. We humans are very good at picking up detailed descriptions that we read and internalizing them in our minds, especially if we find them appealing. The human brain, almost every night, for almost everyone, does house cleaning by dreaming. If someone has read a detailed NDE experience, even though they didn't memorize it, it is imprinted in their brain. At some point during their dream state they may go through the same process and think that is their dream. And then later, claim they were near death when it happened. We all want attention and we all tend to want to share life experience--belong--why religions are so powerful.

I believe what in NDEers are seeing is some kind of defense mechanism the brain has when it is close to dying like when we go unconscious when pain is too great to bear. The tunnel and white light may just be of the neurons firing to keep alive and our beliefs entering in to fill out the rest of the story of what is happening.

Personally I find all of this yearning for answers that are beyond human comprehension a total waste of good usable time that we could spend on real problems right here, right now on earth and let the scientists with tools like space telescopes and atomic microscopes, delve into the universe rather than sharing stories of our time and space travel in our minds and thinking they are real.

This is a fascinating assessment. Worth the few minutes it took to consider, but I'd say the afterworld will still be some kind of "adventure" for most of us. In yoga, they teach that at death, we join the great power of the universe. Perhaps we leave our egos behind, realizing they were only useful during out Earthly existence. Who knows? I'm still hanging on to the here and now.

Interesting and mixed well with science and gobbly-goop beliefs. Science examines the unfamiliar increasingly often as technology affords new tools and toys to work with. You're right in your last sentence and therein could be the answer to why science is not depended upon more openly by so many who trip out with the supernatural. Good write. Thank you again for sharing your mind and investigative acumen.

Darwin's Blind Spot by Frank Ryan

The symbiotic pattern of evolution is everywhere and allows us a very different and fascinating window into the way symbiotic viruses work, since all viruses are symbiotic, including those involved in our human reproduction.
