A key requirement for any author is a web banner. Great fun to make and you can use them on your Facebook page.
It is useful having a web banner and this can double up as a banner on Facebook. Mine is 900x250 pixels, approximately. A web banner is an image so all the text is converted to an image, so you can play around with lots of different fonts this way and these are displayed correctly as it is an image. Some fonts on teh Web are not converted very well otherwise.
My final attempt was helped along by a colleague and I think he helped me create a much more atmospheric banner. As you can see we added atmosphere by having a woodland background and also by changing the font. I got the image from an excellent free website http://www.everystockphoto.com/ so browse away.
You need to chose a narrow slice through the image so be careful what you select. You aslo have to beware that you do not overlay text on the "better" part of the image. Choosing an image that is dark is useful if you use a white text and visa versa.
My drawing package is Serif Drawplus 5 which is a bit dated now.
