Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, the daughter of an Albanian grocer, Mother Teresa was sent to India at 18. After years as a teacher and then principal of a high school, she received a "call within a call" during a train ride, in which she felt God directing her to the slums. By the end of her life, she and the more than 3,000 sisters who followed her were operating a worldwide network of some 350 missions.
Said a fellow nun: "Mother is very ordinary. When people meet her, they are so surprised by her ordinariness. But she allows God to work through her, and he has done extraordinary things."
