Most people try to "plan" their day in order to accomplish all the many tasks assigned to daily life. Often the plan goes awry because of unforeseen events that present themselves. These events often lead to frustration and anxiety. You're late for a meeting and the traffic on the freeway is backed-up for no apparent reason, for example. You find yourself screaming obscenities from the window of your car to no one in particular. To add to the problem, you're not getting service on your phone and you feel like throwing it after the obscenities. You are absolutely helpless, right?
This "time" is a gift if only one were able to see it in that light. It is a moment that is assigned to nothing other than to yourself. It is a moment where you may relax, compose, and reflect. How many minutes out of every day do you purposely direct to yourself? For most of us, not enough. We spend much more time in the investigation of our spouses and our children, our friends and our co-workers. It is like a chef who prepares a feast every day but is never allowed to eat from it.
Meditate and Medicate are words with a common root. Not paying attention to yourself leads to pain and confusion. How is one able to relate to people and events in his life if he does not have a firm relationship with himself?
All avenues to enlightenment begin with the self. Your world is but a reflection of the condition you find yourself in. Is your world peaceful, loving, composed, directed? None other than yourself can make it so.
