Meditation is supposed to induce peace but what peace can it induce in certain cases?

What I am giving below is an extract from Osho’s discourse on meditation. The basic fact is that if you are not in the work of your liking, doing one hour of meditation in the morning followed by 10 hours of misery is highly going to have any effect. For such people doing meditation is missing the wood for the trees.

Meditation is a function of being happy. Meditation follows the happy man like a shadow. Whatever he is doing, he is intensely concentrated.

Be an individual if you want to be happy. If you want to be happy, start choosing on your own. Everybody is being dragged and manipulated. So nobody knows, what is one’s destiny. What really you wanted to do, you have forgotten. Then how you can be happy. Somebody who could have been a poet is just a moneylender. Somebody who could have been a painter is a doctor. Somebody who could have been a good doctor is a businessman. Everybody is displaced. Everybody is doing something that he never wanted to do. Hence Unhappiness. Happiness happens when you fit with your life. When you fit so harmoniously that whatever you are doing is your joy. Then suddenly you come to know that meditation follows you. If you love the work that you are doing, if you love the way you are living, then you are meditative. Then nothing distracts you. When things distract you, it shows that you are not really interested in those things.

If there is one thing that you can learn with me, be aware about your own inner motives, about your own inner destiny. Never loose sight of it, otherwise you will be unhappy and when you are unhappy , people say meditate and you shall become happy. They say concentrate and you will become happy. Prey and you will become happy. Be religious and you shall be happy. This is all nonsense. Be happy and meditation will follow, be happy and religion will follow. Happiness is a basic condition. People become religious only when they become unhappy.

Basic thing is to search for why you are unhappy . The man may have been a beautiful dancer and he is in the office, piling away files. Instead of dancing, he keeps accumulating bank balance and says that he is unhappy and therefore wants some meditation. I can give him. How will it help him. It will only enable him to pursue his activity with relaxation. That is what TM is doing. It may reduce stress but it will not change you.
God comes to you the way he wanted you to be. He knows only that address but you are never found there God can find you only in one way , only in one way he can find you and that is in your inner flowering , as he wanted you to be. Unless you find your spontaneity, unless you find your element, you cannot be happy and if you cannot be happy, you cannot be meditative. Wherever they found a happy person, they found a meditative mind. Both things got associated. It is deemed that happiness comes when one is meditative; it was just the other way around- Meditation comes when you are happy. But to be happy is difficult but to learn meditation is easy. You again start your life as it there was no enforced pattern, as if there was nobody to distract you. You have to drop all patterns that were enforced on you and you have to find your own inner flame.

This is not to suggest that meditations are useless but to indicate where the priority or focus should be.

Thank you for this I like your views. We do have a choice we choose to be happy or not. It is how we react to the situations that were in that makes us happy or not.
Thanks Angela

I really like this. I've never been much for meditating and have considered writing my meditation. Thanks for sharing this. It is a great reminder of what the focus should be.
