I just happened upon a BBC report on homosexuality in Iran... Well, it's quite a frequent theme in our air waves.  However, when I heard what "is not the official Iranian Government posture" I was just flabberghasted.  Many years ago Ayatollah Homeini had signed a law that allowed for sex change.
According to the interviews that were aired, many physicians -- psychotherapists -- suggest their gay or lesbian clients to submit themselves to a change of sex surgery.  According to the information, the government helps to foot the bill and ease some social difficulties. 
Needless to say, many families believe that this is a good alternative to having a homosexual or lesbian child.
Nevertheless, where the surgeries have taken place the subjects have felt very much rejected, and the suicide rate post-sex change operation is high.
All of the above has not taken into account that being transgender entails very different dynamics than homosexuality or lesbianism.  And, as one Iranian lesbian advocate pointed out, being forced into transgenderism leaves out the choice of hiding sexual orientation -- if needed for survival.
It's no relief to say that some people have it worse than in one's own country, but compared to Panama....

Hace poco vi un reporte de la BBC sobre la homosexualidad en Irán... El tema está muy de moda en los medios televisivos.  Empero, cuando escuché la propuesta "no necesariamente oficial" del Gobierno Iraní me sentí más sorprendido que nunca.  Años atrás el Ayatollah Homeini había firmado una ley permitiendo la intervención quirúrgica para cambio de sexo.
De acuerdo con lo que se expuso en el reportaje muchos médicos -- psicoterapeutas - sugieren que los homosexuales y lesbianas se sometan a intervenciones quirúrgicas para cambio de sexo.  De acuerdo con la información, el Gobierno subvenciona algunos gastos y provee ayuda social -- que no define.
Muchas familias iraníes creen que es una buena alternativa tener un hijo transexual que un vástago homosexual o lesbiana.  Y, como señaló una activista lesbiana iraní, los "transexuales" quedan forzados a quedar al descubierto, no teniendo la alternativa de mantenerse "en el closet" si es necesario para su supervivencia como homosexuales o lesbianas..
Las autoridades de salud iraníes saben muy poco sobre la dinánica LGBT.  Lo único que admiten es que existe una "disforia de género."
Aquello de que el mal de otros..... comparados con Panamá.....
