Can you imagine God using that to create something beautiful? I’m think about Michelangelo and how he found a discarded slab of marble that none of the others craftsmen wanted to use. He saw the shepherd boy David in that rock and decided to bring him out for the entire world to see.
Well, it feels like God is dealing with something far less attractive than beautiful white stone when He started working on me. I am more like igneous gabbro, I’m sorry to say, but our God is a visionary. Each day He is chipping away at me because He has a picture in His mind of what I can be. He sees me or you as this angelic, saint-like person that is so gracious and good. But when we look into the mirror, gulp….
By the way I didn’t care to use the word ‘chipping’ in the former paragraph, but you really can’t mold rock can you? Well, let’s say that God can. He can do anything, you know. So there He is sculpting away at the boulder and there is such a look of infinite love and keen interest on His face. He knows that rock (me) isn’t ugly and worthless. Our Father God sees something of infinite value in each one of us and He wants to draw it out, patiently, gently, even if it takes Him a long, long time.
Do you know that the Father has a real neat way of working on His projects? He plunges His hand right into the centre of that hard lump and softens the heart. There is something about the warmth radiating from within that makes the stone more pliable, beautiful. Unfortunately the heart will still be prone to hardness but a touch from the Master’s hand will soften it once again.
Perhaps we will never see what the Father sees in us, or even what others hopefully can see, but that’s okay. Perhaps we will always feel like a work in progress, but that’s okay to. If we humbly admit how much we want Him to make something lovely of us, He will keep working. He’s not disappointed when we fail, and is eager to ‘bring that saint out of hiding’.
