Hershey's Chocolate

‘Sweet Betrayal.’ Sounds like a good title for a romance, doesn’t it.

However, it’s the subject of my letter to the Hershey Company telling them how many years I’ve loved their chocolate, and how, no matter how other brands are considered the elite chocolate and charge double and triple the price, Hershey’s chocolate was my favorite candy and had been since I was a child. But never again will I buy their products.

I’m a ‘baby boomer’ and was raised in the days when chocolate was a treat reserved for special occasions instead of something available every day. My grandfather used to buy a Hershey bar and share it with me, and oh, how I looked forward to that and couldn’t wait until I became an adult so I could buy all I wanted.

My grandfather, father, uncles, husband and son all served in the military and we have a strong love and fierce pride in our country, although sometimes it’s very difficult. I’ve watched our government stand by while large companies moved their work force outside our borders so they can make even bigger profits while the very citizens who worked years and made them great in the first place suffered with job and home loss. For some strange reason, my government doesn’t consult me about such matters, so they do what they wish.

But no matter what company moved out of our country, I feel the most betrayed by the Hershey Company, a corporation that I considered as American as apple pie and hot dogs. I’m so hurt and outraged that even though it’s my favorite chocolate, I’ll never again buy their products. Let Mexico, their new home, support them now. I certainly won’t.
