Love is wonderful but you have to keep it full of surprises.
Title: Our Attraction
I cast my line into the Shenandoah river,
snag someone's line in mine,
reel it in along with a dead minnow.
Kasey runs to free my line --
azure eyes, bluer than his shirt flash.
He jerks and we both fall into the cold.
Lingering fall leaves zip pass like kayaks.
The current yanks at our legs,
cold water steals our breaths.
Clamoring up the banks edge,
our eyes meet on the spot,
we stand shivering.
He puts his arms around me,
shields me from spring snowflakes
and gusts,
temperatures in the low twenties.
Looking into his face, I pluck the ice from his brows,
twist my wet hair into a knot atop my head.
Warmness is kindled between us.
Apologizing, he runs, gathers me a sprig of forsythia.
Deer listen to the hullabaloo,
breaks into a leaping run -- dogs yelp from a campsite seeking freedom.
Smoke from nearby cabins scatter the banks,
forming clouds in the valley above us.
It's forty years since our union.
We've fished the Shenandoah,
followed paw prints around it flanked banks,
watched robins fly here and there digging for worms,
we've found our magnetism
as strong as the wrath rushing down the river on a stormy day.
