It is the new yardstick by which are measuring our husbands.
It was not a yardstick that had been called into play before, but now, well, perhaps I should give you the background.
Barry and Sara, and European couple, live in the same condo complex as I do, and we, plus other expat couples are all friends. We woman get together every now and again for a coffee morning or afternoon tea, and we support each other when any member of our little group is a bit down—I guess you could say we have become each other’s family.
Anyway, Barry goes to the gym and several times we have both been working out in the gym at the same time--for a small, quiet guy he is surprisingly strong judging by the weights he was pushing and pulling.
When he got back to his apartment, after one of these gym sessions, it was locked. He knocked on the door. No answer. He knocked and called out out his wife’s name. No answer. He called out her name repeatedly. No answer. By this point he was panicking, and thought his wife might have collapsed and be lying on the floor unconscious.
So he broke down the door.
Only to find his wife was not home.
Whilst Barry was at the gym, Sara had gone to see a friend in the condo for a brief visit and locked the apartment behind her.
I’m not entirely sure what she said upon her return to the apartment.
Barry’s actions have drawn the same response from us other ex-pat wives: Would our husbands do that for us? If my husband thought I might have collapsed, or fallen off the ladder I have to climb to hang my washing on poles at ceiling height, or slipped and hit my head, or maybe if my heart had just decided to stop for no apparent reason, would he break down the door to get in? Would he embrace that role of heroic Knight and save his wife?
It is not whether our husbands have the physical strength to break the door down, but rather would they TRY?
Barry did. He thought his wife was in danger and he did what he needed to do to get into the apartment without wasting as second.
Barry is our hero.
His love for his wife was demonstrated in glorious fashion.
Husbands, forget flowers, or wine, or a card. We want to know if you would break down doors for us!
