Getting Old In the Real World
I've often heard it said getting old is not for cowards. I think I'm a coward 'cause getting old ain't my favorite thing. First of all, nothing works like it used to and I have pains in body parts I was unaware were in my body. I'm making more notes than I did in high school but they aren't about literature or history. They're so I'll remember where I put things and to turn off the security alarm before I open the back door.
Oh, my, getting old is an adventure. I'm going places I've never been before; like to my doctors more days than a month has and to the hospital for scans and MRI's.
I used to receive fashion magazines and makeup catalogs in my mail and email. Now I get advertisements for medical supplies, depends, assisted living and funeral homes. Somebody thinks I need them even if I don't.
Sometimes I have to help my husband up and sometimes he has to help me up but at least we still manage to get up. There are some perks to getting old. You get to sit around and relax while the younger ones make holiday dinners. If they say anything to you you don't like you just act like you didn't hear them or you tell them you're old and you'll do what you want to. You're finally financially able to afford a housekeeper and old enough to justify it. You get 10% off a cup of coffee at the convenience store.
There are so many ads online about staying fashionable when you're elderly. I'd just like to know how I'm going to look fashionable in the clothes they suggest, when in time, nothing is in the place it originally was. I've noticed e-ads for beautiful hairstyles for woman over 40, over 50. over 60 and 70. I've never seen any for women over 90 so I figure by that time there's not enough hair left to style. Just put a hat and a bathrobe on and forget about it.
I forgot to mention your joints dry out along with other things but your plumbing works overtime.
Merry ChrIistmas and a Happy New year. I hope we all make it to the next one.
