Just about everyone uses a Cell Phone, but a little knowledge about them will go a long ways in getting the one that's best for you

You’ve just seen an advertisement showing the perfect cell phone for you. Now you are ready to run out and get it.

What you have just done is fall into the trap that cell phone providers have developed. Since all phones cannot be used on all networks, they have gotten you to go to theirs.

Are you in one of these situations?
1) Are you unhappy with your current cell phone and provider?
2) Are you one of the rare first-time buyers?
3) Are you relocating to another area and decided to look for a new phone?

It doesn’t matter, the first thing to address is always the same. Look for the system that will supply you the best service for the least cost. All cellular networks are not created equal. Many factors are involved, including number of transmitting locations and channels these can support. It’s not important to understand the technical just the reality

How do you find the best carrier? Ask. Ask your neighbors. Ask co-workers, members of the church you attend, people at the places your regularity visit. In a short period of time you will discover who may or may not be working for them.

Once you have determined the carrier you wish to use, now is the time to decide on the phone. One of the best things to do is to make a list of features you want. Are you looking for a smart-phone, one that is almost a mini-computer in your hands, or are you looking for one to take with you in case of emergencies? Do you need a camera? A music player?

Each carrier has a web page with phones. It gives description of the phones along with their features. This will help narrow it down.

It’s probably a good idea now to go to a phone store. One that will allow you to hold a working one in your hands. Use the buttons. See how the features work. You will be living with the phone for awhile, usually a couple of years. If you enjoy using it, the experience will be enhanced.

You don’t have to buy the phone at the store, it’s possible that you may be able to find it less expensive on-line. But seeing and holding it in the store will give you an understanding on the weight, size and functions of the phone.

Don’t forget to look for accessories. A car charger is a good idea as is having a headset. Do you need a carrying case or an extra battery or charger? Check these prices as well.

Evaluate the cost of everything. The plan, cost for phone, cost of accessories and hidden cost such as penalties to cancel the contract. Do you want to purchase replacement insurance? Check the details on what’s covered; what’s the deductible; and how a claim is filed.

Show the total cost over a two-year time and you’ll have a good idea of the total cost of the phone and service.

Good article.
I wish cell phones would automatically shut off when someone gets into their car, though.
