This is written by a teacher, my husband, Vince, and his concern for education in Arizona, the second poorest state in the Union.
Adult education is forever challenging. It is an area of extreme importance to the Yuma community because, it requires both educators and business people to work together to develop and maintain a viable workforce.
It is important to note that many adults, no matter the background, when they drop out of school that is their level of learning and in general their critical thinking level. Language skills or a lack of them can be detrimental in learning proficiency for the Adult Basic Education test, the General Education Development test or even skills tests.
Many of the adults who come into adult education lack the basic skills of language writing, reading and mathematics. It is therefore, necessary to evaluate the student on the Adult Basic Education test. Once the test is completed, the evaluator or educator needs to determine the grade level that the student is reading at. The overall goal is 9th grade for employment purposes, however all students should be encouraged to strive for higher grade levels.
