Guess who I am

Early Seaside Patronage

Busy feet, quickly walking in the sand,
all lining up beside and between one another.
Leaving their footprints that others can see,
where they’ve been saying “Follow me”.

Eyes wide open, not missing a thing,
bobbing heads, searching and probing.
Strutting colors of white, gray, black, green and blue,
beneath cloudy skies and clearing skies too.

Sitting, standing, waiting for just the right moment.
counting the people and opportunities abounding.
What will be today’s faire of choice,
sandwiches, apples, chips, and cookies of course.

Waiting, watching, perched delicately.
covert and discriminating in their directed mission.
Apparent, but almost unnoticed engulfed in the attitude of apathy.
Later, when everyone except the kids are tired,
they will claim their treasured feast from the uninspired and unsuspecting.

Gathering both natural and man-made morsels,
has been and continues to be their hobby and need.
And though they look so frail and harmless,
I assure you, they can reek of selfishness and greed.

What manner of living creature am I,
with ever so quick a step, and yet I fly?
If by now, you haven’t guessed as much,
I’m a seagull, a pigeon, a sea bird, not touched.
