Do you know how to give a speech without notes? Do you think you need to memorize your speech? Can you only give a speech if it is written out in front of you? If you have answered yes or no, read on.

I have been asked how I have been able to give my speeches without notes. I have a few techniques which I would like to share with you.

CHANGE THE SIZE OF YOUR DOCUMENT:

I like to type out my speeches in Microsoft word. I type it in a 8 x 10 word document and use 14 inch font so I can see it clearly. When I have finished typing out my speech I go to - file. Under file I choose page set up. This is where I change the size of my document. I click on the right margin. I watch the screen as the paper becomes narrower and narrower on the right side. When I feel the information is on half of the page I click the okay button.

Instantly the document is changed. Instead of being 8 x 10 it is now half that size. The next step is to go through and read the document. I read it out loud to make sure I have not missed any words. I then hit the enter key to start making a paragraph of each new thought or each new sentence.

When this part is broken down the document will become longer and be pages longer. When I am satisfied I have added all the information to the document I now am ready to print.

READY FOR PRINTING:

Once the document is printed I take my scissors and cut the paper into halves or thirds. This will depend on you. I then number the pages to keep everything in order.

I now have my speech on small pieces of paper. I can now read each piece of paper separately. On small pages I can easily absorb the content. When I feel I have mastered one page I can go onto the next.

When I first started giving speeches I thought I would have to memorize each line. But that is not the case. All I needed to know is what the subject is, and think in my head the logical order of how my story or subject unfolds. This is why the small pieces of paper are so important.

After you have used this method one or two times you will not need to use any kind of notes at all when actually speaking in front of a group of people.

HAND WRITTEN:

If you like to hand write your speeches - you can use index cards. This is the same idea as typing your speech and making it small and compact. Easy to handle and learn.
