Should you give away free items on your site to increase business? Does it work?

I worked for a man many years ago.  He was a very nice man, but he kind of scared me.  Back then, that's just how I was.  I got along much better with his wife.

He had a really great drive-in Hamburger business going, and about once or twice a day he would just give an order away.  The customer would walk up to the window, cash in hand, and he would thrust the order out and slam the window before they could give him the cash or even a simple thanks.

Did it work?  It sure appeared to.  That little Hamburger business was always busy at lunch and dinner.

Since then, I've visited many small restaurants where the owner picked up the tab for one customer every day.  Did it work?  I think so, because It sure was hard to get in there to try to get that free lunch or dinner.

I recently read an article about giving away free stuff on your website to increase business.  Of course, the economy being what it is today, business is slow anyway, but could it hurt to give away something?  Could it help?  I don't know, but I'm willing to try it out.

I thought and thought about what I could give away.  Well, since my site pertains to my book and my writing, the obvious choice is a book.  But what else could I give away that wouldn't require me to foot the bill for P&H?

Hmm?  I thought on it for a couple of weeks and finally came up with an idea.  Bookmarks.  Promotional bookmarks featuring my book and website information.  All the viewer has to do is load their color printer with a sheet of cardstock paper and click the print button.  Does it cost me anything?  Nope.  Is it taking up much of my time?  Nope.  Will it work?  I'll let you know in the next article.

Fascinating article, Gean. Whether fact or fiction, it kept my attention and kept me reading. And gave me something new to seriously consider.

I'm a sucker for self-help information. I'd even try filling my own dental cavities if I thought I could do it without pain. (Okay. I'm just kidding.)

Now, let me go check out your bookmarks.
