An opportunity to meet an icon from the Civil Rights Movement.
This article is about me meeting an icon from history. The face belongs to Ruby Bridges, who became a symbol of the Civil Rights Movement. For you see I grew up in the 1950's and 60's., part of the segregation area. I live in Greenville, Texas, about 51 miles from the Metroplex, which includes Dallas, Texas. I remember seeing the movie, The Ruby Bridges Stroy, and finally got a chance to meet Ms Ruby Bridges in person. She came to Greenville to visit a seventh grade Language Arts Class taught by a very good friend, Ms Sharee Andrews.
In 1960, Ms Bridges was the first black student to attend William Frantz Elementary in New Orleans, there to desegregate the school, and then forever become a vital part of our country's history. I think this was one moment in time. The artist Norman Rockwall, painted the six year old as she walked up the steps to her new school, while surrounded by escorts of U.S. Marshals.
After speaking with Ms Bridges, found her to be a very shy individual, and discovered that she is not a very public person, and very private. She wanted no media present and focused on her.
