Why has sex always gotten such bad rap throughout western history?
Sex is good. Ok, sex is fantastic. Sex can be a wonderful expression of love and emotional connection, which can powerfully strengthen the bond of any relationship. But sometimes they don't teach this in school. There is even a debate on whether or not to teach anything about sex at all in school.
Why is this? Why does sex get such a bad rap in western society? In most Christian religions, sex outside of marriage is considered a sin. But why is this?
What is the real nature of sin? Although these questions are difficult, and extremely controversial, it helps to explore the origins in order to better understand them. Increasing understanding can lead to growing appreciation, not only for yourself, but for others as well.
The idea of sex outside of marriage being a sin goes all the way back to the Ten Commandments. There is the old joke about Moses coming down from Mt. Sinai telling his people the following news:
"I've got good news, and bad news. The good news is, I've negotiated from 629 laws down to ten. The bad news is that sex is still one of them."
Why was sex in the original Ten Commandments? It helps to imagine society before the invention of agriculture. Men and women lived in small groups of two hundred people or so. The likely didn't have any set of rules, they were ruled by the strongest among them. And if studying our nearest ancestors is any indication of how life was like way back then, the strongest among them enjoyed most of the resources, fathered most of the children.
With the invention of agriculture, societes became very large. The "rule by alpha male," model probably didn't work out so much, so they needed to come up with a better way. Many scholars argue that the Ten Commandments naturally arose out of a need to maintain social order. Making a rule that you could only have sex with your wife would hopefully keep all the alpha males from beating each other to death in competition for the women. Now this doesn't paint a particularly endearing picture of human nature, but one doesn't have to look very far in the world today to see the kind of oppression that would require a rule like this.

Jesus Christ said that from the very beginning sex was meant for the marital relationship because that's the way He created it. It has always been meant to be exclusively between one man and one woman. It was meant to be pleasurable,yes, but also considerate of others best interests as well.
