Gold recovery seems to be the new trend for investors, but some may treat this as a hobby...

I have watched a video today in which a guy was recovering gold from 6 lbs. of gold plated gold fingers retrieved from the old computer units.

After many hours and many steps, the result of the gold recovered was 25 grams of 22K gold. According to today's market price, the .9999 pure gold 24K gold sells for $54.78/gram, so I don't know if it's worth it for everyone to buy the gold finger to recover the gold. Ebay sells those double-sided gold fingers at CAN$174.95 per lb. So 1 lb. would likely just give me only about 4 grams of 22K gold (double, if the gold fingers are double-sided) which may be sold for less than $228.12 (x 2 if the gold fingers are double-sided) if you're lucky you can sell it at that price. This is not to mention the work that is involved in order to recover the gold, and the Hydrochloric Acid and the Hydrogen Peroxide and the lab apparatus that are required to use for the recovery process. I think ebay sellers are selling the gold fingers at too high a price. Some sellers are even selling gold-filled items at 500 grams for $700.00!!! That is too darn expensive!!! I would not spent $700.00 on some cheap gold-filled items. It isn't worth buying them to recover the gold!

I think if you want to keep this thing as a hobby and make a little bit of money on the side (not really sure if you can make money from this) then it is a good thing to do to pass the time. If not, then for concrete value of the gold you might just as well buy those .999 24K pure gold bars.

Thanks so much, everyone, for your valuable comment! I am fairly new in this. So I am taking my time to learn about this.

Apparently, someone, probably in a foreign country, is dismantling computers and other electronic devices and selling these "fingers" as a way of paying for their hard labor. There should be other recoverable parts as well from computers and they may be sold under other categories.

The gold recovery clarified by Danny seems reasonable for those interested in working with hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide. I'm not sure if you need "laboratory equipment" to do the recovery process. Like anything else, accomplishing the recovery requires some expansion and some skill… The essential ingredients in any business.

Mark seems to be talking more about the commodities market. Investing in long-term gain for gold and silver. Slightly related to your article because gold prices certainly affect whether or not it is worthwhile to put in the effort like any recycling… Unfortunately.

6 lbs. for $174.95 doubled-side gold fingers is not unreasonable. The result is you can recover 8 grams from the lot. I think it's a good price. The price for the 500 grams of gold-filled items for $700.00 you are actually paying $1.40/gram, but then you don't know how much gold you can recover from the lot of gold-filled items. I think even if you can recover 1 gram from the lot, it still seems quite profitable. But I know $700.00 it's a lot to pay out all at once. The calculation seems reasonable enough, but I know everything you buy from ebay often comes with shipping cost, so you still need to include the shipping cost into the calculation.

Gold Recovery: Very interesting, Sandi.
Never able, so it seemed, to keep a balance in my check book. Needing something that I knew I would hold onto, a number of years ago, from a local dealer, I purchased one, one ounce "American Eagle". And as time went on, with my thought of owning one pound of gold, over the years I purchased, one at a time, "American Eagles", Canadian "Maple Leafs" and German "Krugerrands". In time my lady friend, who is now my wife, needed some money so I sold fourteen of my ounces of gold ( at a nice profit) and kept Two of the "Eagles". At that time I thought that I would rather own silver so, having enough money left after helping Bonnie, I bought 300 silver "rounds" that contain 99.9% of silver. Every now and then, when the silver prices dropped, I would buy another ten silver rounds and now have a total of (Still have the two gold coins) 450 (most in a bank vault) silver rounds...
The cost of silver rounds go up with the cost of gold... When the market last closed on 4/9/20, gold was at $1,689.60 an ounce and silver at $15.50... So, in my opinion, unless one has a lot of money to invest on something that they will be holding onto a long time, silver is a much better buy, and easier to exchange for...? whatever.
