How to replace negative thoughts with positive
thoughts and reap health benefits

Let's make it clear at the outset of this discourse, a person cannot avoid having negative thoughts invade his mind-space. At one time or another a person will think negatively. Thinking negatively, if allowed to prevail, especially often or for a long period of time, can be detrimental and unhealthy.

Since a person cannot avoid thinking negatively, what can he do to minimize the adverse effects of negative thinking. The proven and sure-fire answer is apply thought-replacement which replaces a negative thought with a positive thought. It changes the channel in the brain. It uses thought-stopping and replacement thoughts to feel better and to be better - to be one's own best friend.

This is like changing the TV channel that comes on you dislike. So when a bad thought or idea comes to your mind you replace it with a good thought. Say to yourself "I can handle this," 'I coped with this before," "God says vengeance is mine," "Tonight I will not go to sleep angry," etc.

I like to sing. So one of my thought-replacement techniques is to sing. This is also a technique I have used for decades to respond to TV ads I don't want to hear. I call it "antidote for TV ads." When a TV ad comes on usually I sing with gusto "Born Free or "A Mighty Fortress is Our God." I do not have to touch the remote. Of course, sometimes I recite poetry.

Allow "mine the mind" to be your daily practice. In this regard, ask God daily for guidance. This can produce high-yielding dividends. I am a witness. On reflection, now during my nonagenarian years, I realize how by applying thought-replacement I have benefited, afforded with a reasonable portion of health and strength, happiness, joy and peace.

Know that you - your soul - is in charge of your mind. "Mine the Mind: Apply Thought-replacement." Wise man Solomon declares, "As a man thinks, so is he."

With all the negative things happening to me, I have always turned them around, like you suggested into positive action, ignoring the warning that something bad will happen. It never really has. Small setbacks are part of life. Positive thinking moves us forward.

My partner, whenever she finds me captive from the TV where I have learned to totally shut off commercials as though they were even there or my work, usually in the evening, looks in the mirror, and starts to get negative.

But she likes song. And she is especially likes the way I sing. So while she prepares me for bed and puts me in it, I sing. She loves almost anything I sing, but especially likes, Today, Unchained Melody, Amazing Grace, Sound of Silence, Summertime, and many others. I know the melodies well, but have trouble bringing up all the lyrics. And, she loves the old songs, like Camptown Races, Oh Susanna, Clementine and She'll Be Comin Round the Mountain.

The songs help calm her troubled mind until we go to bed. Where I have pleasant dreams, sometimes good stories, and she does as well.
