My book, THE VELVET-LINED TOILET BOWL is about the failed drug war. The main focus is a 19 year old girl perpetually imprisoned for using cocaine and having a pipe (paraphernalia). This girl has been a victim of a brutal system of incarcerating young blacks whose only crime is using addictive drugs…I will be at her court hearing on Friday Sept. 20th. I am hoping to call attention to her case and her plight because she is being swallowed up by a monstrous system that will spend 20 thousand dollars to keep her locked up but offers her no meaningful treatment. She has been beaten down and abused, lived on the streets, and now had been in and out of jail for the last few years…
I am a published author (www.srlavin.com) and a retired college professor. I have six children and 13 grand-children. I have lived among and written about the homeless for more than 25 years. I worked with Mitch Snyder in 1984 when we took over LaFayette Park across from the White House and held our ground with demonstrations and fasting.
Zakendra Gary, 19 years old, is perpetually trapped in poverty and has used drugs to escape her plight…she is completely non-violent and her crime is a victimless addictive abuse of drugs. Now the State of Florida has her awaiting trial without bond and with no hope of her ever pursuing “happiness.”
