excerpts from my biography. If you wonder why anyone would even go there at all then a study of the island’s ancient and modern history and the interplay of some of history’s great characters with the island would answer the question.
Robert the Bruce with his well known study of his struggle with a spider, when he wintered on the island in 1306.This inspired him to fight on and win the throne of Scotland in 1314. Queen Elizabeth the first of England and Francis Drake were responsible for a massacre of the islanders, victims of the greater events at the time. In the modern era Marconi made his first commercial application of radio in 1898 from the island and the great entrepreneur Richard Branson’s epic Atlantic balloon crossing in 1987,which nearly cost him his life, demonstrates the importance of this tiny island and why it is so fascinating, however I knew little of these events as I grew up in Glasgow. All I knew was my family roots were there and I had a burning desire to connect with it.
