Are we asleep? 11/11/2005 4:24:20 PM
Hi! I’m kind of new here and would like to introduce myself. I am a retired schoolteacher and some time writer. I am attempting to awaken from the sleep that governs us at this level. Is there anyone else out there who recognizes his or her sleep?
My published novels Tasting the White Water and Sunday Mornings are about a character who attempts to follow the Fourth Way teachings of the Gurdjieff, Krishnamurti, Castaneda, Henry Miller, and others. The teachings say that man as is is asleep. He can do nothing from his own will. He can only react to external conditioning. He is so identified with the cares and woes of material life that he does not see the sky, feel the clouds passing over head, hear the chirping of the evening swallow, taste the wonder of the early autumn night.
Are we asleep? Do we have any understanding of how our machine works? Are we living in the best world that we could live in? Can we call ourselves Christians and not practice or even understand the teachings of Jesus? Are we so tied to our lower instincts that we are incapable of loving our enemy? And how do we awaken from our sleep?
Just a few questions that I’d like to throw out to you.
