: For over two hundred years America has been blessed by men and women of courage, foresight and innovation. Therefore Americans R US is an innovative approach wherein 100 illustrated short poems and intros make important people, places and events come alive. With no chapters and no subject classification, this book has been designed for school students of all grades as an informal, simple guide to Americana. Teachers and parents are encouraged to use the book as they see fit. Although there were thousands of other important topics to choose from, I hope I am forgiven for not including them. In that regard as a former high school teacher, perhaps I will have opened a door through which America’s youth can discover a small part of their rich heritage and enjoy the journey as they do so.
About the author:
Steve Carter was born in Vancouver, attended school in North Van and then put himself through university (UBC). He graduated with a 5 year B. Ed degree having completed 2 majors (His/Geo) and 2 minors (Eng/psychology. After teaching high school SS for 21 years he retired to tour Canada as a working artist. He is a published author, amateur archaeologist, plays senior slo-pitch baseball, umpires, is happily married and is currently living in Port Coquitlam, BC.
I was writing poems for FanStory.com for over 16 months. During that time I started composing short 20 line rhyming poems on Americana such as The Statue of Liberty, the Grand Canyon etc. Someone suggested I add a pic and 200 word prose to accompany each one. After 10 or so, a reviewer suggested that the poems would be great in school for kids not too interested in US history. One thing led to another and I wound up with 100. My publisher Sarah Book Publishing (highly recommended) liked the concept because it was out of the box. No one had ever done anything like it before. I mean nobody.
