A Day in the Life of Writing
12/7/2005 10:18:15 PM

A typical day
6:30 a.m.: Hit snooze alarm. It can’t possibly be time to get up already!

6:35 a.m.: Okay, okay, I’m up…I think. What do I have to do today? Better get some coffee and make a plan…good idea.

7:00 a.m.: Daughter off to school and my eyes are almost all the way open. If I start now, I’ll have an hour to write. Okay, I can do this. I haven’t written anything decent in days…here is my chance. This is the day my fingers will work like magic; ideas will flow out of me like…speaking of flowing, better go to the bathroom first.

7:05 a.m.: This bathroom is a mess. Disgusting! I better clean this before we all get sick. And what in God’s name could that be in the drain?

7:30 a.m.: I need another cup of coffee THEN I will get some work done. Today is the day!

8:00 a.m.: What? 8:00 already? I was going to write for an hour!! Oh well, better get to work. Something has to pay the bills until my book hits it big.

12:00 p.m.: Characters are driving me nuts. I better grab that napkin out of my glove compartment and write that scene down before I forget it. It’s genius! I’ll wipe the chocolate stains off it tonight.

1:00 p.m.: I’m too tired to work. I wish I could write full time. That will be wonderful!

5:00 p.m.: Hmmm, what to make for dinner. Maybe something really good tonight!

6:00 p.m.: Clear away paper plates from Chinese take-out.

7:00 p.m.: Okay, I’m ready. Where is that scene? I think it’s in my purse. Boy, this purse is a mess! How did it get to be such a black hole? I’m just going to organize it a bit before I start writing.

7:30 p.m.: That’s better. Oh no! Laundry for tomorrow! Where to start…where to start….okay, bathroom where everyone throws their clothes. Get a load of laundry in and then I’m definitely getting that scene down on paper!

8:30 p.m.: Better have an after dinner cup of coffee. I’m already getting sleepy and I haven’t written a thing!

8:40 p.m.: What does my darling husband want now? Paperwork he set on counter…hmmmmm. TRY THE COUNTER!!!

8:45 p.m.: Okay, I’m set. Where did I set that scene? Oh yes, on my desk. Okay, let’s go to office and REALLY get down to work!

9:00 p.m.: Boy, this sucks. What in the world was I thinking last night? Delete…delete…delete…

10:00 p.m.: Well, I’ve deleted what I wrote last night…but it wouldn’t have worked anyway. Okay, get into your character’s head, woman! Think! Where would she go now?

10:30 p.m.: Boy my head hurts from staring at this white page on the computer. If I take Excedrins now, I’ll be up all night. ADVIL!!!!

12:00 a.m..: This is excellent. I’m the next Nora Roberts! I’m brilliant! Why has no one discovered me!

12:30 a.m.: Okay, if I go to sleep now, I’ll have six hours…good enough. I’ve done well tonight. I just have to check on daughter, get clothes into dryer, clean off kitchen table before dogs jump up at night and feast, and I’m off to bed.

1:30 a.m.: Staring at ceiling in dark: If I have my hero do this….YES!! That’s it!!!!! Okay, REALLY….you HAVE to go to sleep. If I go to sleep now, I’ll have five hours…good enough.

2:30 a.m.: I can’t have my hero do that! That’s so out of character for him. What I could do though is…darn it!! Okay, if I go to sleep now, I’ll four hours of sleep. I’ll be tired, but I can do it.

9:00 p.m. following night: What in the world was I thinking??? This sucks! Delete…delete…delete…

There’s always tomorrow!
