The old is about to be piped out. What do we expect from the new? My best wishes to everyone who has survived 2003.
In many ways, it has been a fruitful year. Mor books published, I suspect, than ever before.
Some of them were even worthy of publication; but in every year of our Lord, few have deserved to last for long. Their shelf life is short; the interest that they will evoke in future generations is likely to be small.
So we cannot hope for much for our books for the future but those who have been published for the first time will have felt and especial joy in what they have achieved.

I'd like to assure you that 2004 will be the best year yet; but I'm afraid the best I can say is that it's likely to be a challange.
Perhaps I can add something more. I have just been reading that fine book by Maureen Kennedy Salaman, "How to Renew You." She writes that "God, friends, lovers,pets, family, and community, our vital connections to one another, enhance, enrich and extend our lives."
Perhaps I might add a little philosophy of my own, by quoting from my novel "Uncle Rupert" which will be published in January - just a few weeks away. This is how Chapter Two begins -
"Rupert woke and lazily rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. It was a mild morning. The sun was shining. He thought it was going to be a good day. But then he felt most days were going to be good. And even when, by the standards of most people, they turned out to be indifferent or downright dreadful, Rupert remained optimistic. Good days are days you think are good, he reasoned. You can make good days as you go along. Leave the bad ones to those who don't work on making them good. The way Rupert saw it was that, if you make good days as you go along, you improve the joyous balance of your life. Though he'd never have claimed it, he really was a philosophic young fellow."
Perhaps we might try to follow Rupert's way and work on making all our days good.
