Virginia Festival of Books 3/26/2006 6:43:53 AM
Networking is a special benefit of attending book festivals. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the 12th Annual Virginia Book Festival in Charlottesville, VA, this week. Everyone seemed to be enjoying sharing their experiences of hearing good advice, meaningful and funny stories, pep talks and tough publication news from many and varied writers. I found out it is also a great place to network. At one session, I was asked to tell about my novel and was given some advice about marketing. A company was doing videos for free, and I got in on that. The video will be on the web soon. I will have a link to it. The highlight of the week for me was getting to meet Jeffrey Deaver, the creator of Lincoln Rhymes and writer of The Bone Collector and numerous other novels. Not only was it wonderful to be in the midst of great writers like Deaver and Michael Connelly, but Jeffrey actually wanted one of my books, which I just happen to have with me!! I told him he could use it for a doorstop, if he liked, but he remarked, "How about if I read it!" If you have the chance to attend these functions, go for it. And put yourself out there, so you can promote your work wherever you can!! I'm glad I did!
