A little behind-the-scenes of Moment of Impact 12/11/2006 4:14:39 PM
The way that this novel came around, and my motivation for writing this novel is a little different than what you would hear from most authors.
Several years ago, I worked for my uncle at his hearing aid business in Greenville, SC. I answered the phones, booked appointments, sometimes schmoozed with the local politicians and other customers. There was a lot of quiet time while I spent my eight plus hours a day there. What I did to fill the time was read books. I would go through two, sometimes three books in a week.
There were several times when my uncle would catch me reading while there were customers waiting for their appointments. He eventually got fed up with me reading in front of his customers, and told me to find something else to do that looked more professional. I asked him what he suggested, and he said that he didn't care, just stop reading books at his office.
Luckily, I had a computer at my desk that had Word on it. So I started writing short stories. I wrote mainly events that took place, or things that I just made up from my childhood in elementary school. As I wrote these short stories, they began to coalesce into a running story. It had no point to it. It was just sort of rambling on.
Then one day in the midst of my boredom at work, inspiration hit. I thought, 'What if I added an antagonist, and moved the characters up to the high school level and did this, this, and this with them?'
Over the course of the next year and a half, the novel took shape. I was thrilled with it, and when I finished it in February of '06, I let a couple of people read my initial manuscript. They loved it, and provided some valuable feedback of which I incorporated into the final version of the novel. I submitted to several publishing companies, but it was the first company that I submitted it to that accepted it. After a couple of months of negotiations, I signed the contract, and viola, Moment of Impact was born.
Many of the characters in the novel, are based upon the people that I grew up around, or some of my actual teachers. I warned some of the people that I included in the book before it was published. For the most part, they didn't know what to think, but most were thrilled. I did tell them that I changed the names to protect the innocent.
So, there's a little behind-the-scenes of the creation of Moment of Impact.
