"Is My Neighbor A Vampire?" 8/10/2013 4:15:17 PM
The unfinished journal of an unknown woman. Being a young widow without child, having lost my husband in the war, I continue to live in a small cottage we purchased shortly after our marriage, the cottage on a quiet tree lined street in a small town only half an hour from a large city that I work in. As the weeks grow into months my life begins to become mundane as I get up in the morning, have a quick breakfast, then drive across town to the highway and in twenty minutes be at my desk in the city ready to work. However this night, when I get up to make my nightly pilgrimage to the bathroom, I happen to glance out of my second floor bedroom window and see a strange thing, when a dark figure comes off the back porch of the old house next door and seems to glide across the yard into the back woods. For some reason a quick chill runs up my spine, my knowing the old house is all but deserted except for the fact that its appearance is kept up by a commercial gardener, also that I have never seen anyone around the place in the daytime, nor, on asking around, has any of my neighbors.
Weeks pass and I all but forget about the incident, but most nights on my pilgrimage to the bathroom I glance out of the window towards the old house, and one moonlight filled night I am shocked to see, what looks like, the same dark figure gliding around the old house from the front yard to enter into it through the back door. Once again a cold sensation races through me as I watch to see if maybe a light will go on in the house, but as usual it remains dark and when I return to my bed I find I cannot sleep; the image of the dark figure fresh in my mind. Two weeks later my sister and her young teen daughter come for their monthly visit and stay for the night, and as we sit out on the patio having a cookout the subject of the old house comes up. Reluctantly I tell them what I’ve seen six or seven times now and how its messed up my sleeping habits, my not being able to sleep at night and waking up at every little sound.
“Whoever it is seems to be staying at the house, but if so how come they never come out until after dark,” I ask, a shudder passing through me.
“Maybe it’s a vampire,” my niece replies nonchalantly, causing us all to chuckle. However after they leave that afternoon the seed she planted in my mind begins to grow.
The weeks and months have become a year now and on moonlit nights I ocasionally see the dark figure leave or enter the old house, but most of my fears have left me now as time does seem to heal all things. However when my sister comes for her monthly visits now she's always complains about the odor of the garlic I have hanging in each room.
