My Daddy always said... 9/11/2007 1:01:40 PM
Happenings of bleary-eyed authors! "Hey, Baby, it don't take as much water to make a pot of coffee," my daddy always said when he came to visit, and I served him a cup of coffee.
He liked his STRONG! If a spoon wouldn't stand up in a cup of the thick, dark liquid, then someone had used way too much water to make the brew.
His favorite brand was the local Seaport (Medium blend), which would put hair on anyone's chest! While Dad was alive, Mom made two pots of coffee every morning just for the two of them. One pot of Seaport for Dad, and a pot of Maryland Club for her. And believe you me, she was always careful to never mix the coffeepots. In her opinion, Dad's strong brew couldn't be washed out if by per chance she made his Seaport in her pot.
Now, every night before we retire, either Bill or I always preset our coffee maker to go off a 6:00 a.m. the next morning. That way, it will be ready when the first of us arises--usually me. I like to get up first, pour me a cup of hot coffee, and sit at my computer and write while the house is quiet.
One morning last week I had done just that. I awoke, padded to the kitchen, turned on the light over the stove so as not to awaken Bill. Then, I pulled down my new solid- black mug, and poured my first cup of coffee for the day, stirring in a packet of sweetener.
After an hour or so of writing I heard Bill in the kitchen. "Love, what's wrong with the coffee pot?" He called out.
"Nothing's wrong, I had a cup earlier." I said, getting up and walking to the kitchen for another round.
"It's nothing but a pot of hot water!" He said, holding up the carafe of clear, pure, hot water.
Only then did I realize we'd added the water to the reservoir the night before, but had forgotten to add the coffee grounds. Without even realizing it, I had drunk a cup of hot, sweet water.......and called it coffee!
Lord a mercy! My daddy would indeed be ashamed! Probably rolled over in his grave and groaned!
