Unless you are like J.K. Rowling, you won't get rich by writing. So why do we do it? I've been writing for 71 years now. What? Really? Yes, really, really. So you must be rich, yeah? No. Not really. But lately, I've had some breakthroughs.
1) Book for adults:
I'm cooperating with Tate Publishing to produce WHAT THE WITCH DOCTOR TAUGHT ME. It tells about thrills and chills that I encountered during 32 years of off-and-on evangelizing and teaching English in tribal areas of Thailand. I finished writing it 8 years ago, sent it to every publisher I thought might be interested, and got no encouragement. Last year, I found Tate on the internet and we set up a cooperative venture. If I'd simply tucked it away and forgotten it, you wouldn't have a chance to enjoy it. A portion of the proceeds will go for scholarships for Thai hilltribe young folks. Coming out in September as both digital and paper.
2) Chapter book for kids:
I'm using Book Baby to bring out a fun read about a pirate who tracks down a dragon: THE DRAGON WHO STOLE THE HOLIDAYS: A RUSTY THE RED-BEARDED PIRATE MYSTERY. In the midst of all the fun, it demonstrates sound character values. At the end, it also instructs the reader how to create their own dragon. I'm setting up a website to go with it: rustypirateclub.org. The digital book should be available in a couple of weeks.
3) Anecdote for CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL:
A true experience story for their volume FINDING MY FAITH. That's coming out October 11.
So why do I do it? There's always a chance something will tickle the fancy of readers and I'll make a bundle. Can't deny that hope. But the real motivation is, I'm having fun while maybe influencing a few people.
