I just have to brag about this book. Karen Delise is excellent! For those of you who don't know, I am a Humane Investigator and I work with many animal rescues. I see the good, the bad and the ugly, in humans and animals. The majority of the bad and the ugly are performed by the humans to their animals. Many of these animals are dogs - to be more specific - Pit bulls and Pit bull mixes.
I see stories in the newspapers how these dogs have attacked, mauled or killed. The media loves these kinds of stories. The media loves to vilify Pit bulls - to srike fear in your hearts and TELL you what you should be afraid of. What the media fails to report - is the conditions that lead up to the attack. Conditions in which the human or "owner" was responsible for - often pleading ignorance or denial.
Politians supporting the Breed Specific Legislations TELL you to fear this breed, making uneducated and irrational judgements and stating what they believe to be facts - what THEY want you to believe as facts - and the only way to protect yourselves is to support BSL. Then when these Politians instill enough fear into the public and the BSL is established - they become the HERO. All for their personal political gain.
I just got done reading THE PITBULL PLACEBO: The Media, Myths and Politics of Canine Agression by Karen Delise. This book is a MUST READ for those of you interested in the breed, animals, or if you just want a good book loaded with information that will make you think.
If you have been or known someone who has been attacked by a dog - READ THIS BOOK!
If you fear Pit bulls because of what you read in the newspapers or what you see on the news - READ THIS BOOK!

"It is doubtful the human ego will ever allow for the full acknowledgement that the terrible acts exhibited by these dogs were a direct result of the evil in us - be it the Cuban Bloodhound incited to attack a fleeing slave, a Doberman incited to attack a prisoner of war, or a Pit bull incited to attack another Pit bull. These human perversions of the human/dog bond have resulted in the public condemnation, prejudice and accepted cruelty against certain breeds because placing the blame on the dogs allows us to distance ourselves from the abominations found in our own nature."
