“In Wonderment of the Declaration of Independence” 7/3/2013 11:50:26 AM
Posted before under Articles but once again dusted off and polished up. Please feel free to comment or reply to my question at the end.
Thank you to those over the centuries that have provided us and continue to provide us with the opportunity to celebrate our Independence Day in the United States of America.
I find myself reading this incredible document in wonderment. The first part of the first statement in the second paragraph seems to be most quoted and rightfully so.
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
These are the powerful and impervious words of truth.
However in recent days, years, I find myself drawn more to the second part of that statement in our Declaration of Independence.
“— That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed”
This is the part I find to have been misplaced at least in myself.
But misplaced does not mean lost or departed from completely.
So let me declare the wonder I receive from the magic of a few words.
· “— That to secure these rights,”
o Why the use of the word secure, to me it means more than just to gain something but also to protect it because it is precious, not easily attained and of great importance to protect from loss.
· “Governments are instituted among Men,”
o WE build the government. The government is not an entity unto itself. I forget this too often, don’t stay involved, don’t raise my opinions and even get too frustrated to vote on occasion.
· “deriving their just powers”
o JUST powers….need I say more, probably not but I will:
Just: Fair, Impartial, honorable, truthful….so much meaning in four simple letters
· “from the consent of the governed,”
o WE define government. The government does not define us. Which brings us to the illustrious beginning words of our United States Constitution:
