Labels Equal Relationship Doom 3/21/2008 9:46:02 AM
My views about putting labels on significant others and the ineveitable defeat that somes from those expectations. How many times in past relationships have you heard this, "where is this going?" or "what am I to you?". Men and women in all nooks and crannies of the single and dating world have heard this at sometime or another. But what is a simple question to you may cause the other party to cringe and feel as if they're walking on broken glass. Being unfairly pressured to a point where they feel a decision MUST be made RIGHT NOW. When will we ever learn that no one likes to be backed into a corner or forced into anything?! Relationships are intended to be free and partners are supposed to be our team-mates, not always potential husbands and wives.
I am not doctor or psychologist but through my past experiences, I have come to learn that labeling any relationship is grounds for potential doom. An almost definate way of bringing a screeching halt to a perfect friendship or companionship. So why would we want to risk a good thing for sake of a label?
Labels cause pressure because they come with all types of requirements and expectations. When you go to the grocery store, for instance, before you make a purchase most likely you read the label. Now if it turns out that one of those ingredients was or was not included in that product, you instantly demand your money back and some even consider long drawn out lawsuits. So, considering the drama-filled state our world is in right now, why would we want to cause even more chaos and havoc?
Simply stated, labels equal expectations and if something or someone does not meet the "storybook" definition of that particular label, all hell breaks loose. Let's view our relationships as independent and free, stop giving it the label which causes it to be comparable to other people labeled by the same title. Be unique and think of a different pet name for your significant other. Drop the labels...live and love independently because tomorrow is not promised today.
