Dear Literary Connoisseurs,

Even though I am a slightly petrified forty-seven years old, I recently returned to college to specifically study Literature. On my first day of school it seemed so bizarre setting back in a classroom after almost 30 years. I can’t tell you how out of place it felt being the only student over twenty years old or being the only one with gray hair for that matter. To further contrast my dismay, I’m almost six and a half feet tall, weigh over 260 lbs, and tower over all of my classmates. I consider myself a pretty tuff guy that has been hardened by life, yet I felt pretty timid, weak, and maybe even a little embarrassed that first day of class. I felt like Superman trapped in a room full of Kryptonite. Thankfully my uneasy feeling quickly dissipated after I discovered no one cared about my age and that older people going to college is not that uncommon. Still, my age can make for some unattended humor in the class room. One day the teacher asked the class if each of us could remember where we were when the twin towers went down. Obviously everyone remembered, so I followed up with my own question for the teacher. I asked her. “Do you remember where you were when the Challenger blew up?” The class became quiet other than a couple of muffled giggles before she answered, “I’m sorry William, I’m not that old!” Whoops! Once again I had got lost in the moment and forgot how the generations of time divide the events of history.

Though she might be too young to remember the Challenger disaster, she’s not too young to be a well educated excellent English teacher. She is without a doubt, the best educator I have ever had. Yesterday I sailed through my first mid-term exam and I’m now anxious to start on my next essay. She gave the class specific instructions about the general subject and the length of our next essay. The thesis must be about something we each believe in and be between 700 and 1250 words in length. She told us to go online and visit “thisibelive.com” so we can read some of the short essays posted about the “this I believe” subject by various authors for some inspiration. I haven’t narrowed down my subject yet but what a great website. Check it out if you like reading or listening to the words of some very passionate authors from all walks of life. Well I better return to studying the subject at hand so I can write an essay worthy of reading.

My warmest regards, William Bailey
