Thoughts which led to writing the Conspiracy Series. Each day I see the net closing in and more people tuning out. It’s certainly easier to bury yourself in the tube, sports, video games or whatever – and it’s a whole lot more pleasant than focusing on what’s going on around you. But what happens if the majority of us take our awareness and stuff it way down into a dark corner of our minds? Erosion begins.
It starts slowly, so gradually that you might not notice it. Maybe you tune out the news. Maybe you’ve worked a long, hard day or you’ve spent the day looking for a job so that you can work a long, hard day. When you get home, you flip on the TV and the news is on with someone yakking about war and violence and global warming and the latest oil spill and the latest recall and the side effects of some prescription medication and home foreclosures and the economy in the tank and you think – I JUST CAN’T TAKE ANYMORE! – and you feel assaulted in your own home so you turn it off and grab a beer.
While you’re doing that – having your beer or whatever and tuning out – the shadow people in the background who really run things are counting on that. They want to keep you docile, scared, overwhelmed, uninvolved, apathetic – because it’s so much easier to control things when there’s no opposition. When no one is asking any questions, it’s easy to railroad things through. And then one day you wonder: Hey, when did that happen? How did I get here? Where did it all go?
I’ve been thinking about these things as I put the finishing touches on Conspiracy 2: The Agenda. Once again, I’ve mixed fiction with facts– and the facts are so much scarier than anything in fiction. Sometimes it keeps me awake at night because I see the big picture and I can’t do anything about it except try to warn all of you.
