I started to read The Empty Lot Next Door" afraid that the haunting story would get the best of me, and I would not be able to continue. The story I found was so powerful that I could not put the book down, even if that meant leaving a night light on!
This is the story of parents doing the best they can, of brothers spending too much time on their own, of bullying coming from neighborhood boys, brothers, and a terrifying ghost. It is also the story of unexpressed love between parents, sons, and brothers. It is the story of untimed death.
But Mills presents all of these stories through a boy's point of view. He shows us what happened through his own eyes as he witnessed, and experienced them all when he was 11 years old.
